Honda Motor Co.’s Acura has made some notable improvements on its RLX sedan, especially when it comes to safety. The luxury brand made its flagship model much safer with the addition of a number of safety technologies. The 2016 RLX benefits from AcuraWatch, the marque’s suite of safety features and driver assistive technologies designed to help avoid crashes or minimize their severity. This is now available in all trim levels and will come standard on both the Technology and Advance packages.
AcuraWatch is a safety system that premiered on the Acura TLX mid-size sedan. It makes use of camera and radar technologies to sense the vehicle’s surroundings, including other road users. AcuraWatch consists of a group of safety features, and the specific features included in the safety suite depends on the trim level. These features include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, as well as forward collision warning.
Two AcuraWatch features available in both the Technology and Advance packages are Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) and Cross Traffic Monitor.
RDM, which will also be introduced to the 2016 Acura MDX and Honda Pilot SUVs, makes use of a windshield-mounted monocular camera that detects painted lane lines as well as lane and roadway edges. This feature was designed to help the sedan remain in its intended lane with the help of Electric Power Steering (EPS) and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA).
Cross Traffic Monitor is a driver assistive feature that works together with the AcuraWatch’s blind spot monitoring feature. The latter’s radar sensors improve the driver’s view, making these extremely helpful when backing up in parking lots. Cross Traffic Monitor itself uses two blind-spot radars mounted in the rear bumper corners that allow the driver to find out if there is an approaching vehicle.
Meanwhile, the 2016 RLX’s top-level Advance package is also offered with yet another safety feature—the Surround View Camera. This works the same way as Infiniti’s Around View Monitor, as it gives the person behind the wheel a bird’s eye view of the vehicle. Acura’s Surround View Camera utilizes four cameras to provide the driver an image of the area around the vehicle, allowing him or her to have an easier time when parking in tight spaces.
Aside from the aforementioned safety technologies, the 2016 Acura RLX is also equipped with a new suspension system designed to improve ride and handling, as well as reduce noise and vibration.
