2015 Dodge Grand Caravan Review

October 22, 2014

Family transportation should be spacious, convenient and comfortable, but should not come with an expensive price tag. And this is what the 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan is all about. It has a modern yet cavernous interior, a lot of high-tech features, and an engine powerful enough to get the vehicle going regardless of the load. Plus, it gets a price that will not spread your wallet thin.

o    Two Plus Packages that bundles great features at an affordable rate.

A 3.6-liter “Pentastar” V6 engine powers up the 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. Generated output of this engine is a healthy 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with a six-speed automatic that sends power to the front wheels. When properly equipped, the Grand Caravan’s powerful motor helps it tow up to 3,000 pounds. It is also E85-compatible, allowing it to run on blends of gasoline and ethanol.

EPA fuel economy estimates for the Pentastar V6 is 17/25 mpg (gasoline) and 12/18 mpg (E85).

The 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan V6 engine receives the best horsepower rating for its class. So it lends enough power to the vehicle to run at sufficient speed even when it is loaded with passengers and their stuff. The suspension is competent and steering is precise, thereby allowing for a generally comfortable ride.

It should be noted, though, that the new Grand Caravan is not the most refined in its segment. This is apparent from the shakes and bounds it gives out when hitting bumps and potholes that tend to be more compared to its rivals. It also feels ponderous, especially in parking lots where spaces tend to be tight.

A huge portion of the Grand Caravan’s appeal lies on its interior. Gone are the grainy plastics that cover the dash and door panels, and are replaced by better materials. The instrument panel is well designed and there is plenty of space to corral small items.

Flexible, spacious and comfortable are the words that best describe this minivan’s cabin. Aside from seating seven passengers, the clever ‘Stow ‘n Go’ function on the second row seat allows it to be folded flat to the floor to open up additional cargo space. The ‘tailgate seats’ on the third row can also be flipped backwards, creating bench. The cargo space is equally roomy regardless if the rear seat is not folded down.

Those who are interested to buy the new Dodge Grand Caravan have four trim levels to choose from. The features of each trim are outlined below.

AVP: The basic trim AVP is offered with 16-inch steel wheels, dual-zone manual climate control, heated and folding exterior mirrors, power accessories, cruise control, remote keyless entry, AC, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, cloth seats, steering wheel-mounted audio system control, ‘Stow ‘n Go’ rear seats, four-speaker sound system with auxiliary audio jack and a host of standard safety equipment.

SE: Going for the SE trim adds tri-zone manual climate control, body color exterior accents, two extra speakers for the audio system, sunscreen glass, easy-clean floor mats and removable center console.

SXT: Moving on to the SXT trim throws in a couple more niceties that include 16-inch alloy wheels, power adjustable pedals, power lift gate, dual sliding doors.

Both the SE and SXT trims can be further improved with the Plus package, which include second-row power windows, black leather trim and Uconnect voice command with Bluetooth, special upholstery and trim and overhead console among others. A Blacktop package can also be had for both trims, which contains 17-inch aluminum wheels, fog lamps, black grille, interior accents and premium cloth seats.

There is also an entertainment package available for the SXT, which bundles nine-inch screens for the second and third rows, rearview camera, touchscreen display and some of the features available to the R/T trim.

R/T: The top-range R/T receives rearview camera, black leather upholstery with red stitching, sport-tuned suspension, premium Infinity sound system with nine-speakers and subwoofer and power front passenger’s seat.

The R/T can be upgraded with a Blu-ray system, and all the Grand Caravan models with a navigation system and touchscreen infotainment system.
