2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Review

March 13, 2014

If good outward visibility is important to you, you might like the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. It may not shine in the performance department but it offers plenty of room, affordability and good fuel economy for a family vehicle. We’ve got more details below.

  • steering wheel with audio  controls
  • improved noise insulation
  • audio system with touchscreen and HD radio on SE models

A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque, sits under the hood of the new Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. All Outlander Sports can be a front-wheel or an all-wheel drive. Front-wheel ES models are standard with a five-speed manual transmission. A continuously variable transmission or CVT is optional but standard on the all-wheel-drive ES and all SE models.

The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport gained the following fuel economy ratings from the EPA:

2.0L 4 cyl, FWD, manual

24 mpg

30 mpg

26 mpg

2.0L 4 cyl, FWD, CVT

2.0L 4 cyl, AWD, CVT

It’s quite disappointing that the Outlander Sport does not really live up to its name because it isn’t very sporty. The four-cylinder engine provides adequate power but you’d wish the SUV can accelerate quicker from a stop. It isn’t also sharp in turns even if it is wearing 18-inch wheels. Other crossovers in the segment are more refined.

The soft suspension, though, provides the Outlander Sport with smooth and comfortable ride which makes it a good vehicle to drive in for long trips. Brakes are also strong. Parking and maneuverability in tight spaces are surprisingly easy because of the excellent outward visibility from behind the wheel.

We don’t find the Outlander Sport’s interior very attractive. Design isn’t exactly exceptional but some reviewers find it straightforward. The materials are not necessarily cheap but they also don’t look high-grade.

The seats come standard with cloth upholstery and five seating capacity. With multiple adjustments for the driver and front-passenger seats, outward visibility is not a problem. Backseat is surprisingly roomy for adult passengers despite the crossover’s small size.

But the Outlander Sport offers less cargo space than its rivals do. It measures 21.7 cubic feet and 49.5 cubic feet maximum when the rear seats are folded. It is still a reasonable space for a midsize crossover. Overall, the Outlander Sport’s cabin is functional.

The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport has two models: the ES and the SE. ES models come standard with heated side-view mirrors, 18-inch alloy wheels, color LCD display, cloth upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, split fold-down rear seatback, air filtration, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, 4-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system, Bluetooth, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, keyless entry, cruise control, pocket tissue and pen holder, rear-seat center armrest with cup holders, hill start assist, antilock brakes, and stability and traction control.

SE models add automatic headlights, fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, heated front seats, automatic climate control, 6.1-inch touch display, 6-speaker audio system, satellite radio, HD radio, rearview  camera, and engine switch.

Some features that are offered as options are leather seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, navigation system, LED illumination, Piano Black interior trim, all-weather floor mats, and 9-speaker audio system.
