2014 Ford Focus Electric Review

March 28, 2014

If you love quiet rides and great energy efficiency, you better take a look at the 2014 Ford Focus Electric. It shines in the segment for its serene and pleasant cabin and competitive energy efficiency figures. We have more information below.

Powering the electric model of the Ford Focus is a 107-kilowatt (or 143 horsepower) electric motor which gets its power from a 23 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. A single-speed direct-drive transmission sends the power to the front wheels.

Here are the efficiency ratings given by the EPA for the 2014 Ford Focus electric:

City Highway Combined
Fuel economy equivalent (MPGe) 110 mpg 99 mpg 105 mpg
kWh/100 miles 31 34 32

One advantage buyers can enjoy with electric vehicles is there is no fuel-run engine which grunt can disrupt a quiet ride. The Ford Focus electric offers a serene and comfortable ride. The electric motor and the single-speed automatic work together smoothly. Handling is, of course, not as satisfying as the non-electric Focus, but it’s a good one compared with other EVs.

As for charge time, plug in the battery to a 240-volt charging station and it will be replenished in approximately 4 hours. But with a 120-volt wall power outlet, it will take 18 to 20 hours.

Some of the favorites inside the Ford Focus Electric are the high-quality materials (which are actually impressive for the Focus’ price) and the customizable instrument cluster. Not only does it look futuristic and cool but also gives the driver convenience and the information he or she needs.

Front seats are spacious and comfortable for five passengers. They are standard with six possible adjustments and heating function. Leather upholstery is also standard.

Many reviewers found the cargo space lacking, though. The battery pack actually limits the space, but this is typical of all electric cars. The Ford Focus Electric opens up 14.5 cubic feet of space for your stuff. You can fold down the rear seats to expand this to 33.9 cubic feet.

The 2014 Ford Focus Electric is well-equipped with manually adjustable front seats, 60/40 split rear seat, cloth seats, heated front seats, ambient interior lighting, 9-speaker Sony audio system, HD radio, air filtration system, cruise control, dual zone automatic climate control, voice-activated SYNC, keyless access with push-button start, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, MyFord mobile app, MyFord Touch (with audio/video input, SD card reader, 2 USB ports, 8-inch LCD touchscreen and 4.2-inch color LCD display in instrument cluster), satellite radio, navigation system with voice command, 17-inch aluminum wheels, rear spoiler, LED taillights, xenon headlights, and rearview camera.

Some features that are also available are leather seats, 6-way power driver’s seat, rear-seat entertainment system, splash guards, and security system.
