The Audi A8 is not just about style and luxury. It performs and delivers on the road—even like a muscle car does. So if you’ve got the bucks, you should get an A8 as your next luxury family vehicle.
NEW FOR THE 2014 A8
- diesel V6 engine/Audi L TDI model
- standard keyless ignition and power trunk lid on all models
UNDER THE HOOD
The base engine for the 2014 A8 is a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that puts out 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. The new turbocharged diesel version of this engine makes 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. This year’s lineup also includes the existing turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine that generates 420 horsepower and 444 pound-feet of torque. At the top is a 6.3-liter W12 engine that cranks out 500 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque. Only A8s with longer wheelbases can be powered by this engine.
An 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system are standard across the board. And all A8s that come with a V6 engine are standard with the automatic stop-start feature which enhances fuel efficiency.
Here are the fuel economy ratings of the 2014 Audi A8 from the EPA:
|A8 L 4.0T||16/26/19|
|A8 L W12||13/21/16|
ON THE ROAD
You get satisfying performance even from just the base V6 engine of the A8. Freeway passing is effortless and braking is reliably strong to bring the A8 to a stop anytime you wish. But if you are craving for more, you should get behind the wheel of either the V8 or W12 model.
The V8 engine delivers more power and abundant torque which makes the A8 on par with any muscle car. The new diesel engine allows for brisk acceleration. The typical diesel engine clatter is also impressively minimal.
With the standard all-wheel drive and a well-tuned suspension, the A8’s handling has always been excellent. The ride remains comfortable and compliant even on broken pavements. Steering is responsive. And the A8 feels like a light sport sedan regardless of the wheelbase size.

The A8’s cabin is nothing but high-class. Materials are high-grade and the design itself was crafted thoughtfully.
The seats can in no way be uncomfortable because Audi prioritizes comfort. This is why the A8 comes with 18-way heated power-adjustable front seats. Legroom in the back is not an issue too, especially in the L models.
The MMI still received negative comments, though. Compared to the infotainment systems other luxury automakers are offering, Audi’s requires a little time before one can get used to it. Moreover, the trunk lacks space at just 13.2 cubic feet. It does not offer enough room for all the stuff of four adults.
The 2014 Audi A8 3.0T is equipped with adaptive and automatic xenon headlights with washers, LED daytime running lights and taillights, fog lights, side mirrors with LED turn signals, power trunk lid, dual-zone automatic climate control (quad-zone on the L 3.0T), leather-wrapped shift knob, ambient LED interior lighting, sunroof, 18-way heated power front seats with lumbar support, Audi MMI with navigation and handwriting recognition technology, Audi Connect, 7-inch color driver info system, 14-speaker Bose audio system, HD radio, satellite radio, SD card slot, iPod integration, in-dash DVD player, Bluetooth, Audi Advanced Key, Drive Select, and automatic wipers.
The TDI model gets four-zone automatic climate control and the same standard features the base model has. The 4.0T is similarly equipped.
And the top-of-the-line A8 L W12 features LED headlights; heated steering wheel; Alcantara headliner; dual-pane acoustic glass; panoramic sunroof; ventilation, heating and massage functions for all seats; 22-way front comfort seats; rear-seat pass-through with ski bag; rear-seat entertainment system; side assist; and top- and corner-view camera system.
Some of the available features are night vision assistant with pedestrian detection, lane assist, adaptive cruise control, 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, power sunroof, mini refrigerator, and a rear relaxation seat.
